Fast Start Helps Women's Volleyball To Sweep At NYIT
Purple Knights Have Now Won Seven Matches In A Row and Are 10-1 Overall And 5-0 in The ECC
Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team got off to a fast start defeating the host NYIT Bears, 25-9, in the opening set of play, and the Purple Knights never looked posting a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-21) East Coast Conference road win on Thursday night on Long Island. The win, UB's seventh in a row, keeps the team unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play, and ups Bridgeport's season mark to 10-1. NYIT now stands at 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the ECC.
UB senior Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) posted a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs, plus Savic led the Bridgeport offense with eight kills.
Senior Jade Zhao (Huhhot, China) had a big match for the Purple Knights with seven kills on the night.
Sophomore Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) chipped in six kills for the winners, and senior Amanda Kunrath (Ivoti, Brazil) added five kills and three blocks for UB.
Senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) added five kills and 13 digs for Bridgeport on Thursday, and classmate Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) led the Purple Knights' defense with 19 digs.
Graduate student Giovana Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil) helped direct the UB offense with a team-high 14 assists, plus she contributed three service aces.
Up next for the Bridgeport volleyball team is a home ECC match with LIU Post on Tuesday night. Action is slated to begin in Hubbell Gym at 7:00 p.m.
