UB Volleyball Defeats Barry, 3-1, To Open 2014 At 2-0 After Day One In Florida
Purple Knights Will Wrap Up 2014 Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic Hosted By Palm Beach Atlantic University With Two Matches On Saturday
West Palm Beach, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team finished a perfect 2-0 opening day of the 2014 season and beginning of the Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida with a four set, 26-24, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22 win over the Barry University Buccaneers on Friday. UB is now 2-0, and Barry is an even 1-1 after one day of the 2014 season.
In the win over the Buccaneers, senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led the Purple Knights' offense with 13 kills and a .476 hitting percentage.
Junior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) also reached double-digit kills with 12.
Senior Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) had another solid all-around contest with nine kills, 18 assists and seven digs.
Newcomer Giovana Soares (Grad. Student, Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a double-double in the win over Barry with 21 assists and 14 digs.
Libero Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) was stellar on defense recording 22 digs for the victorious Purple Knights.
Larissa Oliveira (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and sophomore Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) were excellent at the net in Friday's second win, as Oliveira had eight kills and three blocks plus Randen chipped in seven kills and four blocks.
The Bridgeport women's volleyball team will close out action in the 2014 Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday with a morning match versus Eckerd and an afternoon tilt versus the host Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University.
