Strong Defense Lifts Purple Knights To Four-Set ECC Volleyball Win Over Daemen
Sunday's Win Is Number 13 In A Row For UB-Purple Knights Set To Host Next Weekend's ECC Championship Tournament
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team used a strong defensive effort on Sunday to wrap up their 2013 regular season with a hard-fought, four-set, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-22 East Coast Conference home win over the Daemen College Wildcats. As a team, Bridgeport racked up 55 digs (with three different players hitting double digits in that category) and had 15 total team blocks. Sunday's victory is also the Purple Knights' thirteenth in a row and 17 win in their last 18 matches. UB heads in the 2013 ECC Championship Tournament with a 19-2 overall record and a 15-2 conference mark. Sunday's loss snapped an impressive 15-match winning streak for the Wildcats, who finished their 2013 season at 23-10 overall and 10-6 in the ECC. Sunday's match featured 13 ties and five lead changes through the course of the four sets.
Sophomore Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) led the Bridgeport offense with 17 kills, and she also added three service aces plus three total blocks.
Junior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, and junior Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) notched another triple-double with 24 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills.
Sophomore libero Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) had 14 digs, and junior middle blocker Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) controlled the net slamming nine kills and adding a whopping eight blocks.
Senior setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) had a fine afternoon with 20 assists and nine digs for UB.
Up next, the top-seeded Purple Knights will host the 2013 East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23. UB will take on number-four seed, Dowling College at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and number-two seeded NYIT will play number-three seed LIU Post at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The winners of Friday's matches will play for the 2013 ECC Women's Volleyball Crown and an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
