Top-Seeded Volleyball Storms Into 2012 ECC Championship Final With Sweep Over Dowling
Purple Knights Will Face LIU Post At 5:00 p.m. On Saturday For ECC Crown
Bridgeport, Conn.-The top-seeded University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team notched its twelfth win in a row and stormed into the finals of the 2012 East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament with a straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 win over the fourth-seeded Dowling College Golden Lions on Friday night in UB's Hubbell Gym. Bridgeport will host number three seed LIU Post in Saturday's final which will begin at 5:00 p.m. LIU Post outlasted number two seed NYIT in five sets in Friday's second semifinal. With Friday's win, the Purple Knights are now 24-4 overall. Dowling is now 20-14.
Sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led Bridgeport with 17 kills on the night. Shen hit .448 in the match recording those 17 kills on 29 attacks with four errors.
UB senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) fell just shy of double-digit kills with nine.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the Bridgeport offense to the tune of 30 assist, plus she contributed seven digs.
Senior Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) led the Bridgeport back row defense with eight digs, and sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) dominated the net for the Purple Knights with six total blocks (two solos and four assists).
Bethany Shepard led Dowling with 17 kills, and teammate Morgan Mutranowski had a match-high 13 digs for the Golden Lions.
