UB Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season With Team's Eleventh Straight Victory
Purple Knights Top LIU Post, 3-1, To Roll Into ECC Championship Tournament At 23-4 Overall
Brookville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team closed out its 2012 regular season schedule by picking up its eleventh consecutive win and avenging the team's only East Coast Conference loss of the season as the Purple Knights defeated the host LIU Post Pioneers, 3-1, on Wednesday night. UB won the match by scores of 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18. Bridgeport is now 23-4 overall and 15-1 in the East Coast Conference. LIU Post is now 22-13 overall and 11-5 in the ECC. Bridgeport will host the 2012 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament which begins on Friday, and the top-seeded Purple Knights will play the number four seed, Dowling College Golden Lions at 5:00 p.m., and number three seeded LIU Post will face number two seed NYIT at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) and sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) each blasted 14 kills to lead the Purple Knights' offense. Springer had six kills in the fourth and deciding set, and Shen, who had a double-double with 17 digs, had seven kills in the third set. Ying also contributed six service aces for the winners.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) had a double-double of her own with 39 assists and 13 digs.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) led the Bridgeport defense from the back row a match-high 23 digs.
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) had 14 digs and eight kills for UB on Wednesday night.
Heather Adams and Harlee Meyers led LIU Post with 10 kills apiece.
