UB Volleyball Moves To 15-4 Overall And 8-1 In ECC Play With 3-1 Home Win Over Roberts Wesleyan
Purple Knights Drop First Set But Rebound To Post The Win
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team upped its overall record to 15-4 and remained atop the East Coast Conference standings with an 8-1 mark, as the Purple Knights posted a 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 25-22, 27-25) home ECC win over the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's match was a back-and-forth affair that featured a total of 40 ties and 13 lead changes.
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led the Bridgeport offense with 25 kills, and she also added 11 digs and three block assists.
Savic was joined in double-digit kills by sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) with 12 and senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) with 10. Shen also notched a double-double as she added 17 digs, and Springer contributed four block assists for the winners.
Setter Fernanda Silva (So., Brasilia, Brazil) had a fine all-around match recording a double-double with 49 assists and 10 digs, plus Silva added two block assists.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) led the Purple Knights on defense with a match-high 23 digs.
Freshman Sofija Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had an excellent game for the winners recording eight kills with a .400 attack percentage and also amassing six block assists.
Sophomore Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) fell just short of double figures in digs, as she finished with nine.
The Purple Knights did well defensively in Sunday's win recording 73 digs and 11 total blocks.
The Bridgeport women's volleyball team is back in action on Tuesday as they host the Owls of Southern Connecticut Sate University in a non-conference tilt. First serve in Hubbell Gym is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
