UB Volleyball Falls To New Haven In Five Sets
Purple Knights Now 12-4 On The Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team suffered its second consecutive fine-set loss at home on Thursday night, as the Purple Knight fell to the visiting University of New Haven Chargers, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 12-15, in a battle of NCAA Division II East Region heavyweights. UB is now 12-4 overall; while UNH ups its overall record to an impressive 14-1.
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led Bridgeport with 14 kills and a match-high 25 digs. Savic was joined in double-figure kills by senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) with 13, sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) with 12 kills and senior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil) with 10 kills. Shen also recorded a double-double, as she notched 17 digs.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the UB offense to the tune of 51 assists.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) added 18 digs on defense for the Purple Knights, and sophomore Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) also chipped in 13 digs on the night.
New Haven's Keidy Candelaria played a strong match leading all players with 27 kills, plus she added 15 digs and four service aces.
Bridgeport will look to stop a two-match losing streak on Saturday afternoon as they return to East Coast Conference play at the University of the District of Columbia. Action gets underway in our nation's capital at 2:00 p.m.
