LIU Post Hands Volleyball Its First Conference Loss of 2012 With Five-Set Win Over The Purple Knights
UB Now 12-3 Overall And 5-1 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team suffered its first East Coast Conference loss of the 2012 season and the Purple Knights saw their six-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday night, as UB fell in five-sets to the visiting LIU Post Pioneers, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 19-21. Bridgeport is now 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the ECC. LIU Post is now 12-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led the Purple Knights with a double-double that included match-highs with 20 kills and 29 digs. Savic also added five service aces and two block assists on the night.
Sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) also notched a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs. Senior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil) also reached double-figure kills with 11, and Simas also had four block assists and three service aces.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) was the third UB player with a double-double on Tuesday night with 48 assists and 16 digs.
Two other Purple Knights recorded double-digit digs against the Pioneers for the Bridgeport defense in senior Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) with 18, and sophomore Michele Santos (Campinas, Brazil) with 15.
The UB women's volleyball team will look to get back in the win column at home on Thursday night when they close out their five-match homestand with a clash against the University of New Haven Chargers in a rematch of the 2011 NCAA Division II East Regional Final. Game time in Hubbell Gym is set for 7:00 p.m.
