Purple Knights Win Back-And-Forth Non-Conference Volleyball Tussle At Stonehill
UB Tops Skyhawks In Five Sets To Up Its Overall Record To 8-2
Easton, Mass. - In a match that saw 38 ties and 18 lead changes, the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team posted a back-and-forth, five set, non-conference win over the host Stonehill College Skyhawks on Tuesday night, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-8. With the win, UB is now 8-2 overall, and the Purple Knights have won back-t0-back matches. With the loss Stonehill is now 6-6 on the 2012 season.
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) had 16 kills to lead Bridgeport, and she recorded a double-double with 19 digs. Savic was joined in double-figure kills by classmate Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) with 13 and senior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil with 10. Shen also notched a double-double with 18 digs.
On defense, sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was strong at the net with seven block assists, and senior Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C. , Canada) starred in the back row with 26 digs.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil0 was in control of the UB offense with 44 assists.
The Purple Knights continue a busy week of volleyball on Thursday night when they return to conference play at Queens. On Friday night, the Purple Knights are back in Hubbell Gym when they host Franklin Pierce in a non-conference contest.
