Volleyball Starts 2012 Conference Schedule With Four-Set Win At Dowling
Purple Knights Now 6-1 Overall After Claiming Fourth Consecutive Victory
Oakdale, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team opened its 2012 East Coast Conference schedule with a hard-fought, four-set road win (25-11, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22) over the host Dowling College Golden Lions on a stormy Tuesday night on Long Island. The victory is UB's fourth consecutive win, and the Purple Knights are now 6-1 overall. Dowling is now 7-3 overall on the 2012 campaign and 0-2 in East Coast Conference play.
Sophomore Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led three UB players in double-figure kills with 19 on the night. Shen hit .389 in the win and also added six digs for the winners.
Shen was joined in double-digit kills by sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) with 14 and senior Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) who smashed a personal, season-high 10 kills. Savic also had nine digs for the Purple Knights.
As a team, Bridgeport had a .295 attack percentage on the evening.
Sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) had a fine night amassing a season-high 53 assists.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) notched a game-high 20 digs on defense for the Purple Knights.
Bethany Shephard led the Dowling offense with 14 kills in the four sets.
The Bridgeport volleyball team is back in action on Thursday night (September 20) when the Purple Knights continue their six-match road swing at the University of New Haven in a rematch of last season's NCAA Division II East Regional Final. Action gets underway in West Haven, Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening.
