Volleyball Falls In Five Sets At NYIT
UB Now 12-4 Overall And 5-2 In Conference Play
Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team dropped a five-set East Coast Conference tilt to the host NYIT Bears on Long Island on Tuesday night by a score of 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 14-16. The Bears scored the final eight points of the match to overcome a 14-8 deficit in the deciding fifth set. UB is now 12-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play. NYIT raises its overall mark to 14-6, and its ECC record to 7-2.
Senior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led a balance offensive attack for the Purple Knights with 21 kills, and she also had 15 digs. Freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) chipped in 16 kills and 14 digs.
Also reaching double-figure kills for Bridgeport were freshman Larissa Oliviera (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with 11 and junior Sabrina Simas (Blumenau, Brazil) with 10. Oliviera also had five blocks on the night (one solo and four assists).
Senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) directed the UB offense with 56 assist, and she also had 10 digs.
Junior Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) led the Bridgeport defense with a total of 23 digs.
NYIT's Shelby Cable led all players in the match with 24 kills.
The Purple Knights will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when they host Molloy College in Hubbell Gym. Action gets underway at 3:00 p.m.
