Volleyball Tops Stonehill In Five Sets
Purple Knights Head Into ECC Opener Versus NYIT On Thursday Night With A 4-1 Overall Record
Bridgeport, Conn.-In a match that was separated by only 12 total points, the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team raised its overall record to 4-1 with a tough, five-set, non-conference home win over the Stonehill College Skyhawks on Tuesday night. The Purple Knights prevailed in the match and snapped a 10-match winning streak by Skyhawks, who are now 11-2 overall, by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12.
Senior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led a balanced Bridgeport offensive attack as they each recorded 14 kills. They both also recorded double-doubles as Costa chipped in 16 digs, and Savic added 18 digs.
Freshman Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) reached double-figures in kills with 13, and she also played excellent defense at the net adding seven total blocks (one solo, six assists).
Senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) had 44 assists on the night, plus two kills, 18 digs, three block assists and one service ace.
Libero Carolina Lobato (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was steady on defense for the Purple Knights with 17 digs.
Stonehill's Sydney Maxey led all players on the night with 31 kills, and she also chipped in 24 digs and four blocks.
Bridgeport is back in action on Thursday night at home as the Purple Knights host NYIT in the 2011 East Coast Conference opener for UB. Action gets underway in Hubbell Gym at 7:00 p.m.
