Bridgeport Swim Teams Continue Busy Early Season Slate At Pace On Friday Night
Men Top Host Setters, 196-78, And Women Fall By 10 Points, 148-138, By Spotting Pace 36 Diving Points
Pleasantville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams continued their busy early season schedule on Friday night at Pace University, and the UB men moved to 2-0 in dual meets with a convincing 196-78 victory over the Setters; while the UB women were defeated by ten points, 148-138, as 36 of the host's points came in diving. The Bridgeport women are now 1-1 in dual meets so far in 2018.
For the Purple Knights on the women's side, newcomer Mariia Rezhylo (Kiev, Ukraine) posted an NCAA Division II B cut in winning the 100 Breaststroke (1:03.3) in her first-ever short course yards meet. She also took first in the 200 Breaststroke (2:22.0) and the 100 Fly and anchored UB's winning sprint relay. Senior captain Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) was a triple-individual event winner taking first in the 50, 100 and 200 Freestyles, as well as helping lead the UB women to a freestyle relay crown on Friday night. Freshman Diana Naglic (Muta, Slovenia) captured three tough events posting wins in the 1,000 and 500 Freestyles along with the 200 Fly. Diana also was part of the winning sprint relay squad.
In men's action, junior Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) came within .3 seconds of an NCAA Division II B cut in winning the 1,000 Free with a time of 9:33.4, and he also took first in the 500 Free and anchored the winning sprint relay team. Senior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) captured both the 100 and 200 Backstrokes and was a winner on both the medley and freestyle relays for the Purple Knights. Sophomore Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) won the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and was part of the winning medley relay team, and junior Juan Patino (Cali, Columbia) was a double-winner taking the top spot in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, and he also swam on the winning sprint relay.
Up next, the Bridgeport women will travel to Long Island to take on LIU Post in a dual meet on Saturday, November 3, and the men are back in action in the pool at the BU Invitational that begins on Friday, November 16.
