Zera & Gimenez Each Win Three Events To Power UB Women & Men Swimmers Past Manhattan College
Women Defeat Jaspers, 132-91 And Men Top Manhattan, 135-104

Bronx, N.Y .– Senior Patrycja Zera (Zabki, Poland) and sophomore Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) both won three individual events to lead the UB Purple Knights women's and men's swimming team to dual meet victories over the Manhattan College Jaspers on Saturday afternoon. The women were victorious by a 132 – 91 final tally and the men triumphed with a score of 135 – 104. Zera led the way for the Women with wins in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:03.52), 1000-yard Freestyle (11:32.99) and the 200-yard Backstroke (2:17.73) while Gimenez spearheaded the men's efforts by winning the 100-yard Backstroke (52.81), 50-yard Freestyle (21.68) and 200-yeard Breaststroke, in a school record and NCAA "B" qualifying time of 2:08.08.
The Purple Knight women received additional support from double individual event winners sophomore Ilka Oberle (Schwanau, Germany) in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:10.52) and 200-yard Breaststroke (2:33.87) and freshmen Maria Trubitsyna (Moscow, Russia) in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:56.25) and 200-yard Butterfly (2:11.19) plus Mona Hagelstein (Hamburg, Germany) in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:15.38) and 100-yard Freestyle (55.87) for the UB Women.
On the men's side, a trio of Purple Knight rookies had two wins each, as junior transfer Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) won the 200-yard Freestyle (1:44.82) and the 200-yard Butterfly (1:55.81), freshmen Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) was victorious in the 1000-yard Freestyle (10:02.64) and the 100-yard Freestyle (48.18) and Igor Vulesevic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) won the 200-yard Individual Medley (1:59.04) and the 200-yard Backstroke, breaking the only UB varsity record on the day in a time of 1:55.87.
Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) added an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 100-yard Freestyle (46.51) while leading off the Men's 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
The Bridgeport women's & men's swimming team are back in action when they visit The College of Saint Rose on Friday, November 11 at 7:30 pm at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute pool in Troy, NY. The next day, Saturday, November 12, the annual Purple White Meet will be held at Wheeler Recreation Center at 1:00 pm.
