Women's Swimming Opens 2011-12 Season With Win Over Queens (N.Y.)
Purple Knights Post 112-93 Victory
Flushing N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's swimming team opened its 2011-12 competitive schedule with a 112-93 meet victory over the Queens College Knights on Friday afternoon.
Four UB swimmers won two events on Friday afternoon, sophomore Maria Trubitsyna (Moscow, Russia) won the 1000-yard Free with a time of 10:33.53, also her first NCAA "B"cut. She also dominated the 500-yard Freestyle with a winning time of 5:11.93. Classmate Ilka Oberle (Schwanau , Germany) took the wins in the 400-yard IM (4:51.72) and the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:11.30). Taking second place in the 400-yard IM was Maris Visse (Tallinn, Estonia ) with a time of 4:56.33.
Freshman Alja Tavcar ( Ljubljana, Slovenia) got her first wins as a Purple Knight in the 50 Freestyle (25.72) and 100 Freestyle (55.56).
Along her side, Mona Hagelstein ( Hamburg , Germany) got her college career off to an excellent start by winning two individual events on Friday afternoon the 200-yard Free (2:03.06) and the 100-yard Butterfly (59.15). She also swam the butterfly on the Purple Knights' winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:53.87) alongside teammates Tavcar, Oberle and junior Anna Krasnowska (Kedzierzyn-Kozie, Poland).
