Rindge, N.H.-After playing a scoreless deadlock in the first half, Southern New Hampshire's Alyssa Anderson scored the only goal of the match off a counterattack just over 10 minutes into the second half, as the Penmen defeated the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team, 1-0, in the 2023 season opener for both squads played on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.
Bridgeport outshot SNHU, 11-6, on the day, but the Purple Knights could not find the back of the net, as Claudia Keith made seven saves to notch the shutout. UB also finished with a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxembourg) had four shots in the match for the Purple Knights, and freshman goalkeeper Angelina Griva (Zakynthos, Greece) made three stops in her Bridgeport debut.
Friday's loss snaps a record 19-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season for the University of Bridgeport women's soccer program.
Up next, the Purple Knights will look to post their first victory of 2023 on Sunday afternoon when UB takes on Southern Connecticut State University at 12 noon in a contest that will be again played in Rindge, New Hampshire on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.
