UB Women's Soccer Wraps Up 2019 Regular Season With Senior Day Tilt Versus Roberts Wesleyan
Purple Knights Fall To Redhawks, 2-1
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team wrapped up its 2019 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon by dominating the stat sheet against the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks, but visitors managed to pull out a hard-fought, 2-1, East Coast Conference victory. Bridgeport outshot RWC, 20-5, and held a 14-1 advantage on corner kicks, but the two of the Redhawks' shots found the back of the net; while the Purple Knights hit a post and crossbar during the contest, plus Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel made nine saves on the day. UB finishes the regular season at 9-7-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the ECC. The Redhawks wrap up their 2019 campaign at 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-2 in conference action. Saturday's loss by the Purple Knights also snaps a 20-match home unbeaten streak for Bridgeport the team's last loss on home turf which came on October 14, 217 against Mercy College.
All of Saturday's scoring came in the second half, as RWC's Julia Doriski gave her team a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
Bridgeport's Rebekka Skaasheim (Jr., Balestrand. Norway) tied things up at 1-1 just under five minutes later when she scored her second goal of 2019 off an assist from senior Jenna Denis (Ridgefield, Conn.) after a goalmouth scramble following a corner kick.
The Redhawks would score the match-winning goal just two minutes later when Israela Groves found the back of the net for the sixth time this season.
Up next, the top-seeded Purple Knights will open the 2019 East Coast Conference Championship at home on Thursday evening against the fourth-seed team.
