Four First Half Goals Lift UB Women's Soccer To Home Win Over Adelphi
Senior Valentina Florez Scorers Twice From The Penalty Spot To Help Lift Her Team To The 4-1 Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-All the goals in the match were scored in the first half on Wednesday night, as the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up an impressive 4-1 non-conference home win over the visiting Adelphi University Panthers, who came into the match as the sixth-ranked team by the NCAA in the East Region. With the victory, Bridgeport moves to 9-6-2 overall, and with the defeat, Adelphi slips to 9-5-2 on the season.
The Purple Knights got on the scoreboard quickly in the match when senior Valentina Florez (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) converted her first of two penalty kicks in the opening 45 minutes, just over five minutes into play, after junior Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) was brought down in the box. Florez would score her second goal of the night from the spot, again after Basilicato was fouled, just over 25 minutes later.
Adelphi would tie the match at 1-1 just over six minutes after Florez' initial strike on a goal by Maialen Herreros off a long through ball from Taylor Iacono.
UB's Marieke Kramer (Sr., Megchelen, Netherlands) put home what proved to the match-winning goal at the 14:21 mark of play, when she scored her fifth marker of 2019 on a beautiful shot curled into the lower right corner of net to give her team a 2-1 lead which they never relinquished.
After Florez' second tally made the score 3-1 in favor of the Purple Knights, Bridgeport would finish off the scoring on the night when freshman Helen Klos (Erkelenz, Germany) slotted home goal number two of the year off a beautiful passing play from senior Nara DaCosta (Pancas, Brazil) and junior Abigail Befford (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) with just under four minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
UB freshman goalkeeper Helena Dahlstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) made five saves on the night to pick up her seventh win of the season.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will close out the 2019 regular season with a Senior Day home match on Saturday versus Roberts Wesleyan College. A victory over the Redhawks would mean the Purple Knights finish their 2019 East Coast Conference schedule without a loss. Game time is for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
