Maegen Doyle Wraps Up Successful Summer With Second Team UWS All-East Selection
Helped The Connecticut Fusion To An Unbeaten Regular Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-University of Bridgeport women's soccer standout Maegen Doyle (Sr., Harwich, England) wrapped a successful summer of soccer playing for the Connecticut Fusion with her selection as a Second Team All-UWS (United Women's Soccer) East Division squad.
Doyle played and started in seven matches in her debut season with the Fusion, totaling 587 minutes of action. She tied the franchise's single-season record for goals with nine and added three assists. Maegen was also named to the UWS Team of the Week two times in 2019 along with an additional honorable mention selection. In her first match with the club, a 4-0 win against Rochester Lancers on May 24, she scored a first-half hat trick, just the second hat trick in club history. Doyle scored goals in six of her seven appearances and also had a two-goal game at New Jersey Copa on June 29, with three one-goal, one-assist matches. While this was her first season with the Fusion, it was not Maegen's first in UWS as she played parts of the previous two seasons with the now defunct New York Surf. In those two seasons, she registered four goals and five assists in eight matches for the team, giving her now 13 career goals and eight assists in 15 total UWS matches.
Follow Purple Knight Marieke Kramer joined Doyle on the field for the Fusion this season starting five matches, going the full 90 minutes four times, and totaling 533 minutes. She also provided an assist in a 6-0 victory over Worcester Smiles on June 21, her lone point of 2019. While this was her first season in Connecticut, it was her second season in UWS as in 2018, she played nine games for the New York Surf.
It was a banner 2019 campaign for the Connecticut Fusion, who are members of United Women's Soccer (UWS), which is a league sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation and is a tier-two league in the US Women's Soccer league pyramid, one level below the National Women's Soccer League, the only full-time professional league for women's soccer in the United States. The Fusion, whose roster is compiled of active and former college players and play their home games at the Farmington Sports Arena, completed their second season of play in UWS this year. They went unbeaten in the regular season by going 8-0-2, outscoring their opponents, 27-6, and finished in second place in the East Conference, missing out on the top spot by goal difference. Their performance in the regular season qualified them for the playoffs for the second consecutive season but fell at home to the eventual East Conference tournament champions Lancaster Inferno 2-1 in the semifinals.
Doyle, the reigning United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Player of the Year, and her teammates will begin defense of their 2018 National Championship on Friday, September 6 against Southern Connecticut State University in Manchester, New Hampshire.
