Purple Knights Move On To NCAA Division II Women's Soccer East Regional Final With 3-0 Blanking Of St. Rose

Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team advanced to the East Regional Final of the 2018 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship with a 3-0 home win over the visiting Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose in Second Round action at Knights Field on Sunday afternoon.  With the victory, the Purple Knights, the seond seed in the region, move on with a record of 16-4-1; while St. Rose, the East's number six seed, closes out its 2018 season at 13-5-4.  Bridgeport will now face the winner of the LIU Post, who defeated Franklin Pierce, 3-1, for the East Regional title next Friday afternoon at Bloomsburg University.

Bridgeport posted a perfect 11-0-0 record at Knights Field this season.

UB off to a quick start on Sunday, when sophomore Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) scored her sixth goal of the year off an assist from Marieke Kramer (Jr., Megchelen, Netherlands) just 13:03 into play.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the host Purple Knights until just over six minutes into the second half when sophomore Amanda Ebbesson (Solna, Sweden) headed home an insurance marker, her first goal of the season, off an assist from senior Karoline Vieira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) off a play started off a corner kick from junior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England).

Doyle would then finish things off for Bridgeport when she scored off a penalty kick with just under 10 minutes to play, giving her a team-high 25 goals this season.  The penalty kick was drawn on a foul of Kramer, who perhaps was the best player on the field in the match today, in the box.

On the afternoon, the host Purple Knights outshot St. Rose, 20-11.

UB senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made two saves to earn the shutout, her ninth clean sheet of 2018 and number 30 of her career.  Wendelius also now has 55 wins in a Bridgeport uniform.

St. Rose goalkeeper Marika Laurendeau made eight stops on the day for the Golden Knights.
