Pair Of Second Half Free Kick Goals Give UB Women's Soccer A 2-0 ECC Win Over Molloy
Bridgeport Now 10-3-1 Overall And 6-1-0 In The ECC
Bridgeport, Conn.-Second half free kick goals by junior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) and senior Karoline Vieira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) propelled the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team to its sixth straight win, a 2-0 home East Coast Conference triumph over the visiting Molloy College Lions on a chilly Wednesday evening at Knights Field. UB is also now unbeaten in eight consecutive outings, as the Purple Knights move to 10-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 in conference play. Molloy is now 5-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the ECC.
Wednesday's win also guarantees the UB a spot in this season's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament, and the team has also moved into first place in the ECC standing with 18 points.
Doyle netted the match-winning score in the 56th minute of play when she rocketed her sixteenth goal of 2018 past the Molloy keeper from a free kick just outside the penalty area.
Vieira added an insurance tally, her second goal of the season just over 10 minutes later, when her long free kick skipped past the Lions' goalie into the far corner of the net.
The Purple Knights dominated the match outshooting Molloy, 22-6, on the night. The visitors were limited to only one shot in the second half, and that came in the final minute of action.
UB senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made two saves on the night to earn her sixth clean sheet of the season.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will play its final regular season home tilt of 2018 when the Purple Knights host Queens (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon in a Senior Day contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
