Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the number eight ranked team in the NCAA Division II ranks in the Adelphi University Panthers on Wednesday night at Knights Field, and the visitors came away with a hard-fought 3-2 win in overtime tying the game with 5:31 to play in regulation and winning the contest with a score 5:36 into the extra period. With the victory, Adelphi remains unbeaten so far in 2017 at 6-0-0. Bridgeport is now 2-4-1.
Adelphi netted the only goal of the match in the first half when Jeanine Nunez put home a penalty kick at the 37:44 mark after a UB trip in the box.
The host Purple Knights would storm back to take a 2-1 lead in the second stanza when freshman Eleonore Freby (Sollentuna, Sweden) scored at the 66:16 mark, and classmate Rebekka Skaasheim (Balestrand, Norway) gave her team a one goal advantage just over 18 minutes later. Both of those tallies are goals number one of their collegiate careers.
The Panthers would tie the game with 5:31 to play in regulation when Kerianne Scorce tapped home a score off a wild goalmouth scramble that had around ten players fighting for the ball.
AU won the game on a goal by Alexsis Weiser in the first OT.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team returns to East Coast Conference play with a Saturday match-up in Flushing, N.Y. against Queens College. Kick-off is set for 12 noon.
