Bridgeport, Conn.-Seven different players scored goals as the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up its eighth straight victory and sixth consecutive clean sheet with a convincing 7-0 East Coast Conference home win over the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks on Friday night in the Park City. UB is now 11-3-0 overall and remain unbeaten in ECC play at 5-0-0. RWC is now 9-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Senior Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) got the host squad on the board quickly knocking home a penalty kick after graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) was fouled in the box just 1:31 into action. Worthington would add four assists later in the match to give her six points on the night.
Agirre would also score his team-high seventeenth goal of the season later in the match, and add an assist on senior Shannon Colligan's (Greenwich, Conn.) eighth goal of 2016 in the first half. Idoia now has a seven-match goal scoring streak.
Also scoring goals for the winners on Friday night were junior Amy Strath (Aberdeen, Scotland), who also had an assist in the match, senior Julia Weidenmark (Varnamo, Sweden), junior Nicole Greenwald (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior Carolina Rico (N. Bergen, N.J.).
On the night, Bridgeport simply dominated play, as the Purple Knights outshot the Redhawks, 28-4.
Sophomores Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) and Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany) each play one half of the match and each made one save in sharing the shutout. Wendelius started the contest and earned her ninth win of the season.
The UB women's soccer team is back in action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., when the Purple Knights host the Wildcats of Daemen College in an ECC matchup.
