Lacey, Wash.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team closed out its trip to the Sate of Washington in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights cruised to a 7-1 non-conference win over the host Saints of St. Martin's University. The victory snaps a two-game losing skid for UB, as the team ups its season record to 4-3 overall. The Saints slip to 1-6-1 overall.
Bridgeport netted four goals in the first half and added three more in the second 45 minutes for their season-high total of seven tallies.
Senior Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) got the Purple Knights on the scoreboard quickly finding the back of the net just 3:23 into play. Classmates Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) and Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) also scored in the first half for the winners with Neby scoring the second and fourth goals of the opening stanza.
The host Saints scored the first goal of the second half before the Purple Knights responded with the final three tallies of the afternoon to make the final score 7-1 in favor of the visitors. In the second half, Bridgeport got goals from graduate student Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and seniors Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Stephanie Vahos (Shelton, Conn.).
UB got three assists on the day; one each from juniors Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Amy Strath (Aberdeen, Scotland) plus sophomore Rebecka Ronnegard (Norrkoping, Sweden).
Three players saw action in net for Bridgeport in sophomore Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany), who started and earned the win in just over 40 minutes of action, junior Sydney Norden (Anniston, Ala.) and freshman Annelise Jennings (Warminster, Pa.), who finished the match between the pipes.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team returns to Knights Field on Wednesday night when they host fellow 2015 NCAA Division National Tournament team, the Rams of Philadelphia University. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Park City.
