Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team advanced to the finals of the 2015 East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament with a hard-fought 2-0 win over the number four-seed Mercy College Mavericks on Thursday afternoon at Knights Field. The top-seed Purple Knights will now host the win, will now host the number two seeded Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks, who defeated LIU Post 3-2 in overtime, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday for the 2015 ECC Women's Soccer Title. UB, ranked number seven in the nation, is now 17-1-1 overall and unbeaten in its last 13 matches. Mercy ends it 2015 season at 8-6-2.
Both of the Bridgeport goals on Thursday came off headers, as freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.) put home her 19th goal of the year off an assist from Flo Gamby (Sr., Goffs Oaks, England) at the 15:08 mark of the first half.
Gamby would give her team some insurance in the second half when she connected off a free kick from junior Nicola Worthington (Cholley, England) at the 63:54 mark of action/
Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made five saves to notch her ninth solo shutout of the season.
Mercy keeper Nicole Augustine made four saves for the Mavericks.
