Purple Knights Claim Regular Season ECC Women's Soccer Title With 4-0 Win At Daemen
Top Seed UB Will Now Face Mercy At Home On Thursday In Conference Championship Tournament Semifinals
Amherst, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team wrapped up the 2015 East Coast Conference regular season title with a 4-0 road win over the host Daemen College Wildcats on Sunday in windy Western New York. UB finishes the 2015 regular season at 8-0-1 in conference play and 16-1-1 overall. Bridgeport is unbeaten in its last 12 matches, and UB has won six ECC regular season women's soccer crowns since 2007. Daemen completes its season at 7-10-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the ECC.
Freshman Jess Laszlo (Stamford, Conn.) scored the first two goals of the day for the Purple Knights netting the game-winner just 4:48 into play off an assist for Flo Gamby (Sr., Goffs Oaks, England).
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Purple Knights until Laszlo netted her team-leading 18th goal of the year off a goalmouth scramble in the 63rd minute to make the score 2-0.
The Purple Knights would add two more markers late in the second half when sophomores Carolina Rico (N. Bergen, N.J.) off an assist from junior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) in the 79th minute and Nicole Greenwald (Levittown, N.Y.) off an assist from Rico in the 85th minute, each found the back of the net for the second time in 2015.
Bridgeport dominated the match from start to finish outshooting the host Wildcats, 31-4.
Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made one save for the Purple Knights to record win number 13 of the season and her eighth solo shutout.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will open play in the 2015 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon, November 5, when the top-seeded Purple Knights host number four seed Mercy College in semifinal action. Game time at Knights Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
