Women's Soccer Drops 3-2 Double Overtime Heartbreaker To AIC
Game Winning Goal Comes With Under One Minute To Play In Second Extra Period
Lowell, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team held two one goal leads on Sunday afternoon, but American International's Caroline Boyce scored with only 58 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Yellow Jackets to a heart-stopping 3-2 win over the Purple Knights in a match played at the UMass Lowell Classic. Bridgeport is now 0-2 in the early going of the 2012 campaign. The victory evens AIC's record at 1-1.
Freshman Gabby Reis (West Haven, Conn.) opened the scoring on the afternoon for Bridgeport when she put home a penalty kick at the 3:20 mark of play to net the first marker of her college career.
The Purple Knights held that 1-0 lead until the 64th minute when the Yellow Jackets tied things up with a goal off a corner kick.
Graduate student Julia Colley (Harlow, England) put the Purple Knights back in front, 2-1, when she scored her first goal of 2012 off an assist from Reis from a corner kick with just 4:02 to play in regulation.
Unfortunately for UB fans, AIC would send the game into overtime when they knotted things up at 2-2 with only 2:12 to go in the second half.
Bridgeport junior goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden) played well on Sunday, as she was under constant pressure, making 10 saves. AIC outshot Bridgeport, 21-11, on the day.
The UB women's soccer team is next in action on Wednesday night when the team continues its six-match, season-opening road swing at Southern New Hampshire. Play gets underway in the Granite State at 7:00 p.m.
