Bio

Smullen joined the staff at the University of Bridgeport to become the Purple Knights’ women’s lacrosse coach beginning in 2010, and she directed the lacrosse program from the 2010 season through 2015 and returned to the sidelines as head coach for the 2017 and 2021 seasons.

She began he career in athletics administration at UB serving as the Purple Knights’ equipment and home game manager in 2011-12.  Smullen then became the department’s Assistant Compliance Director and was named Assistant Athletic Director/SWA in October of 2012 and progressed to Associate Director of Athletics for Business Affairs in the fall of 2015.

Smullen came to UB from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut where she has served as assistant women’s lacrosse coach in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, the QU women’s lacrosse team won the Northeast Conference regular season title and had the most successful season in school history with an .812 winning percentage.

A native of West Haven, Connecticut and a graduate of West Haven High School where she was a four-member of the WHHS soccer and lacrosse teams plus a team captain, Kate earned her Bachelor’s Degree in History from Central Connecticut State University in 2006.  During her time in CCSU, she was a four-year standout for the Blue Devils’ lacrosse team and also served as a team captain.  In 2008, Smullen received her Masters of Education from the University of New Haven.
