Late Surge Propels Women's Lacrosse To Big 15-10 ECC Road Win Over Queens (N.Y.) College
Purple Knights Score Final Five Goals Of The Game To Grab The Victory
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team scored the final five goals of the game to pick up an important 15-10 East Coast Conference road win over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in New York City on Wednesday afternoon. The Purple Knights, who have now won two games in a row and four out of their last five contests, are now 5-6 overall and move to an even 2-2 in conference action. QC is now 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the ECC. UB trailed 7-2 with 12:06 remaining in the first half, and the visitors were down, 7-6, at the half before outscoring the hosts, 9-3, in the final 30 minutes of action.
Freshman Julia Ruscio (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.) each netted four goals to lead the Bridgeport offense. Ruscio also contributed seven draw controls and assist for the winners. Orsini now leads the Purple Knights with 31 goals so far in 2018.
UB junior Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.) had a five-point day tallying two goals and three assists. Senior Ariana Weingrad (Hicksville, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist for the visitors on Wednesday.
The Purple Knights also got single goals from senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.), who also had a pair of helpers, junior Amanda Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, N.Y.) and sophomore Lindsey Guadagni (Bayville, N.Y.).
Sophomore goalkeeper Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) made 10 stops to earn win number five of the season.
Up next, the Bridgeport women's lacrosse team will play its penultimate home game of the season on Saturday afternoon looking to run its winning streak to three games when St. Thomas Aquinas College comes to Knights Field for an East Coast Conference contest. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and Saturday will also be Senior Day.
