Late Second Half Run Lifts Women's Lacrosse To 13-10 Win Over Chestnut Hill
Purple Knights Now 9-2 On The Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team picked up a hard-fought, 13-10, non-conference win over the visiting Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Thursday afternoon at Knights Field. The win improves the Purple Knights record to 9-2 overall; while the Griffins fall to 5-7.
With the scored tied at 10-10 with 6:25 left in the second half, UB closed the game out on a 3-0 run to take the win with sophomores Katlyn Dempsey (Elmont, N.Y.) breaking the tie and Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) tallying the game's final two goals.
In a high scoring first half that saw the Purple Knights leading 9-7 at the break, sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and senior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) both recorded hat tricks. Six players scored for a well-balanced Griffins' attack in the first 30 minutes.
Mengel started the scoring in the second half with her fourth goal, before Chestnut Hill notched the next three goals. Two of those goals came from Lea Sanders who led the Griffins; attack with a hat trick. With just over 10 minutes left in the contest, Dempsey broke the tie with a dodge to net and a shot that hit both goal pipes. Junior goalkeeper Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) preserved the lead and made nine total saves in the game.
The Purple Knights are on the road this Saturday for a conference matchup with the Dowling College Golden Lions. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
