Senior Gabrielle Valela Nets Seven Goals As Women's Lacrosse Moves To 6-0 With 19-10 Win Over Pace
Six Wins Are A Single-Season Program Record For UB Women's Lacrosse In Team's Fifth Year At The Varsity Level
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) netted seven goals on Monday afternoon to help lead the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team to a 19-10 non-conference victory over the visiting Pace University Setters. The win continues the Purple Knights record-setting start to the season, as UB is now 6-0 on the year. Pace is now 3-3. The six wins are also a single-season program record for Bridgeport. UB, in its fifth-year at the varsity level, posted five wins in 2013.
Freshman Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) added three goals and two assists for the winners. Sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) chipped in three goals and one assist for the Purple Knights, and senior Shealyn Scully (Huntington, N.Y.) contributed two goals and two assists for Bridgeport.
Stephanie Chadnick and Casey Gelderman led Pace with three goals apiece.
So far this season, the UB offense has been clicking on all cylinders outscoring the opposition, 95-46, through six games.
Junior Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) was strong in the Bridgeport net on Monday making 10 saves to up her season record to 6-0.
The UB women's lacrosse team is next in action on Saturday afternoon at home when they return to East Coast Conference play hosting Mercy College at 1:00 p.m.
