UB Women's Lacrosse Sweeps Florida Trip With 15-13 Victory Over Florida Tech
Purple Knights Now 5-0 On The Season
Orlando, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport completed a sweep of its two-game trip to Florida on Wednesday afternoon, as the Purple Knights defeated the Florida Tech Panthers, 15-13, in a contest that took place at Disney's Wide World of Sports. UB continues its record-breaking start to a season, as the team moves to an unblemished 5-0 on the year. FIT is now 4-4 overall.
Bridgeport got off to a fast start on Wednesday racing out to a 5-0 lead and holding a 10-4 advantage at the half, but the Panthers battled all the way back to grab a 12-11 lead with 14:36 to play, only to see UB come back with four straight goals scored between the 13:46 and 3:17 marks of the second half to put the game away.
Sophomore Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) led the Purple Knights' offense with four goals in the win over the Panthers. Senior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and two assists, plus freshman Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.) added three goals and one assist for the winners.
UB sophomores Katlyn Dempsey (Elmont, N.Y.) and Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) each had two goals on Wednesday.
Junior Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made seven saves in net for the Purple Knights to raise her season record to 5-0 in 2015.
Next on the schedule for the UB women's lacrosse team is a Monday road meeting with the Pace University Setters. Game time is for 3:00 p.m. on March 23.
