Purple Knights Pick Up First Women's Lacrosse Win Of 2014 With 16-8 Victory At Chestnut Hill
UB Back In Action At Home On Saturday Versus Southern Connecticut State
Lafayette Hill, Pa.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the 2014 on Tuesday afternoon, as the Purple Knights posted a 16-8 non-conference road win over the host Chestnut Hill College Griffins. Bridgeport is now 1-6 on the year, and Chestnut Hill remains winless at 0-6.
With the game tied at 3-3 with 18:45 to play in the first half, the Purple Knights closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead which they never relinquished.
Junior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored four goals and had one assist plus sophomore Allie Wiggins (Waterford, Conn.) added three goals and two assists for the winners. Freshman Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) also had a hat trick for the Purple Knights helping the team to a single-game, season high 16 goals.
Junior Emily Catalano (N. Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman Katlyn Dempsey (Elmont, N.Y.) had two goals each for UB, and freshmen Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) and Kerry Mackinnon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) each had single goals for Bridgeport.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Carney (Norwalk, Conn.) made eight saves in net for the victorious Purple Knights.
The UB women's lacrosse team returns home on Saturday afternoon (March 22) when Southern Connecticut State comes to Knights Field for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference clash.
