Women's Gymnastics Opens 2018 Schedule With Home Win Over Southern Connecticut State

Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team opened its 2018 season at home on Saturday night in fine style with a 192.650-186.150 dual meet win over the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut State University.
UB won all four events on the night posting scores of 48.225 on the vault, 48.675 on the bars, 47.350 on the beam and 48.400 in the floor exercise.
On the vault, sophomore Nina Whittaker (Salem, N.H.) took first place with a score of 9.750. Teammates Brieanna Zine (Jr., Brockton, Mass.) and Kelsey Campbell (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) finished as part of three-way tie for second place on the vault with scores of 9.675.
Campbell, who would win the all-around on Saturday with a score of 38.775 in the four events, took first place on the bars with a score of 9.850 to lead a Purple Knights sweep of the top five spots in the event. Junior Thomara Powell-Brown (Rocky Hill, Conn.) took second on the bars with a 9.775, junior Kelly Aycock (Locust Grove, Ga.) was third with a score of 9.700 and senior Kelli Tereshko (Madison, Indiana) and junior Maritza Futch (Atlanta, Ga.) tied for fourth place with scores of 9.675.
UB went one-two-three on the balance beam led by sophomore Maya Reimers (New York, N.Y.) winning the event with a score of 9.700. Freshman Lauren Ramirez (Gilbert, Az.) took second place with a score of 9.675, and Kelsey Campbell grabbed third with a score of 9.575.
Nina Whittaker was the top Bridgeport finisher in the floor exercise taking second place with a score of 9.725. She was followed by Maya Reimers in third place with a score of 9.700, and Kelly Ayccok and Kelsey Campbell tied for fourth place in the floor exercise with score of 9.675.
Up next, the UB women's gymnastics team will travel to the University of New Hampshire for a dual meet next Saturday, January 13. Action is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
