Bridgeport Takes Second In 2017 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Team Final
UB Finishes With 195.500 To Take Behind Texas Women's University At 196.125
Seattle, Wash.-For the third consecutive season, the University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team placed second at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Team Championship, as on Friday, the Purple Knights posted a team score of 195.500 to finish behind first place Texas Women's University which totaled 196.125 team points. Lindenwood University, the two-time defending USAG Collegiate Team Champions, finished in third place at 195.375, and Cornell University was fourth with a score of 194.950. The 2017 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship is being hosted by Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington.
UB held a 147.225-147.150 lead over TWU heading into the final rotation of the night with Bridgeport on the bars and the Pioneers on the vault, and in that final rotation, Texas Women's scored 48.875; while the Purple Knights went 48.275.
In the other three events in Saturday, UB scored 49.025 on the balance beam, 49.200 in the floor exercise and 49.000 on the vault.
The top finishers in each event for UB were senior Kimberly Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) on the vault (9.925), sophomore Thomara Powell-Brown (Rocky Hill, Conn.) on the bars (9.725), senior Brianna Comport (Gilbertsville, Pa.) plus junior Carol Chiles (Fairfield, Calif.) on the balance beam (9.900) and Comport and classmate Randi Cutolo (South Jordan, Utah) in the floor exercise (9.900).
UB will now close out the 2017 women's gymnastics season in Sunday's USAG Individual Event Finals with the Purple Knights competing 10 times in the four events when action begins at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
