Women's Gymnastics Continues Strong Start To 2017 Season With Dual Meet Win At Southern Connecticut State
Team Right Back In Action On Sunday At Penn
New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team began its second consecutive busy weekend of back-to-back competitions on Saturday afternoon by topping the host Southern Connecticut State Owls in a dual meet, 194.075-192.000.
The Purple Knights won three of the four team events scoring 48.650 on the vault, 48.750 on the bars and 49.075 in the floor exercise, plus UB totaled 47.600 on the balance beam.
Bridgeport gymnasts took individual first places in each of the four events, and junior Kelsey Campbell (Las Vegas, Nev.), who won the all-around competition for the third straight meet with a personal record score of 39.075. Campbell tied for second on the bars (9.775), tied for third on the vault (9.750) and the in floor exercise (9.825) and finished fourth on the beam (9.725).
Senior Brianna Comport (Gilbertsville, Pa.) won two events taking the top spot on the balance beam with a score of 9.990 and winning the floor exercise with another 9.990.
Freshman Maya Reimers (New York, N.Y) was second in the floor exercise with a score of 9.875.
On the bars, senior Christine Liautaud (Cary, Illinois) took first place with a score of 9.800, and she was followed by Campbell and sophomore Maritza Futch (Atlanta, Ga.), who tied for second at 9.775.
On the vault, senior Kimberly Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) took first place with a score of 9.825, and freshman Nina Whittaker (Salem, N.H.) was second totaling a score of 9.800.
The UB women's gymnastics team is right back in action on Super Bowl Sunday, as the Purple Knights travel to Philadelphia for a quad-meet hosted by Penn. Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
