SIX IN A ROW!!! Purple Knights Capture Sixth Straight USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate Team National Championship
Team Posts Season-High Team Score Of 195.225 To Grab National Crown
Providence, R.I.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics squad won its sixth straight USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Team National Championship on Saturday night at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, as the Purple Knights grabbed this year's crown in style posting a season-high team score of 195.225. Texas Women's University finished second with a score of 194.725. Seattle Pacific University took third place with a score of 194.550, and Air Force took fourth in the four-team finals with a score of 194.350.
UB opened up Saturday night's action with a strong 49.075 team total in the floor exercise and after posting a 48.800 on the vault and a 49.200 on the bars, the Purple Knights wrapped up their sixth straight USAG Team Title with a strong total of 48.150 on the balance beam.
Top finishers in each event for Bridgeport were senior Melissa Doucette (Somersworth, N.H.) on the vault with a 9.825 (tie for fourth), senior Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) on the bars with a 9.875 (tie for third), freshman Rachel DiCarlo (Harleysville, Pa.) on the beam with a 9.700 (tie for second) and junior Caitlin Perry (N. Kingston, R.I.) shined in her home state taking first in the floor exercise with an impressive 9.900, and Melissa Doucette took in the floor exercise with a score of 9.875.
The UB women's gymnastics team will close out its 2014 season on Sunday afternoon, as several Purple Knights will compete in the Individual Event Finals at the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championship.
