Bridgeport Women Grab Sixth Straight ECAC Division II Gymnastics Title
Lissette La Fex Named 2014 ECAC Division II Athlete of the Year And Head Coach Byron Knox Named ECAC Division II Coach of the Year
West Chester, Pa.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team captured its sixth consecutive and number 17 all-time ECAC Division II title on Saturday afternoon in West Chester, Pennsylvania on the campus of West Chester University, as the Purple Knights posted a team total of 192.825 to top both the host Rams and Southern Connecticut State University, as they each scored a 190.250 to tie for second place. As a team, the Purple Knights won three of the four events taking first in the vault (48.600), the bars (48.150) and the floor exercise (48.700).
UB senior Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, California), who was named the 2014 ECAC Division II Women's Gymnastics Athlete of the Year, took home the meet's all-around title with a score of 38.825. Classmate Melissa Doucette (Somersworth, N.H.) took third in the all-around on Saturday with a total of 37.925 in the four events.
In individual events, UB went one-two on both the vault and bars. On the vault, freshman Hope Tralli (Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y) was first with a score of 9.800, and senior Kamri Riles (Ellenwood, Georgia) was second with a score of 9.775. On the bars, La Fex took the top spot with a score of 9.800, and freshman Christine Liautaud (Cary, Illinois) was second with a score of 9.725.
Junior Caitlin Perry (N. Kingston, R.I.) was Bridgeport's top finisher in the floor exercise grabbing second place with a score of 9.800, and on the beam, freshman Rachel DiCarlo (Harleysville, Pa.) was the top Purple Knight taking fourth place with a score of 9.725.
University of Bridgeport head coach Byron Knox was named 2014 ECAC Division II Coach of the Year.
The UB women's gymnastics team will now await word on any individual qualifiers to the NCAA Regionals before heading to the 2013 USAG National Championship that will be hosted by Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island from April 11-13.
