UB Gymnastics Wins Quad Meet At Rutgers
Purple Knights Score 194.100 To Top Rutgers, Penn And Ursinus Plus Post Nation's Top Vault Score So Far In 2013
New Brunswick, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport gymnastics team turned in a strong performance on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights posted a team score of 194.100 to win a quad meet hosted by Rutgers University. Saturday's team score improved upon the Purple Knights' season-opening total of 191.450 amassed in last Thursday night's home dual meet victory over the University of Alaska Anchorage. On Saturday, UB topped Rutgers (192.925), Penn (190.525) and Ursinus (182.725).
The Purple Knights won three of the four events on Saturday afternoon winning the vault with the highest score amassed by any team in the nation so far in 2013 (49.325), the bars (47.950) and the beam (48.375). UB was second in the floor exercise with a total of 48.450.
In Saturday's all-around, sophomore Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) took second place with a total of 39.025, and junior Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) was third with a total score of 38.525. Tsikhanovich took first place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825, and she was second on the beam with a score of 9.800. La Fex tied for third on the bars with a score of 9.675.
UB went one-two-three on the vault as senior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) won the event with a score of 9.950, junior Kamri Riles (Ellenwood, Ga.) was second with a score of 9.900 and newcomer Melissa Doucette (Jr., Somersworth, N.H.) tied for third place with a score of 9.850.
The Bridgeport gymnastics team is right back in action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, January 20 as the Purple Knights will travel to Providence, R.I. for a meet hosted by Brown University that will feature the host Bears, Rhode Island College, Wilson College and the URI Club team plus the Purple Knights. Action is set to begin at 12 noon.
