Monica Mesalles Sallares And Emily Repko Earn Weekly ECAC Gymnastics Awards For The Second Time In 2012
Pair Helped UB Shine At 2012 Metroplex Invitational
Centerville, Mass.-Two members of the University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team have earned weekly ECAC Division II awards for their outstanding performances for the Purple Knights in last Saturday night's Metroplex Invitational held in Forth Worth, Texas. Junior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) has been selected as the ECAC Division II Gymnast of the Week, and senior Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, Pa.) has been named the ECAC Division II Specialist of the Week. This is the second time in 2012 that the pair has been recognized for their outstanding performances by the ECAC.
Mesalles Sallares won the all-around competition (39.050) at the 2012 Metroplex Challenge topping gymnasts from Division I power Stanford University and also Brown University. She also took first place in the vault with an impressive 9.9 score. In addition, she scored a 9.55 on the uneven parallel bars, 9.825 on the balance beam and 9.775 on the floor exercise. Bridgeport registered its second-highest team total of the season with 193.6 points, finishing second to Stanford.
Repko took second place on the beam against some strong Division I competition Saturday at the 2012 Metroplex Invitational, performing a score of 9.85. She also turned in a solid routine in the floor exercise with a 9.75. She helped the Purple Knights finish second in the team standings.
This week, the UB gymnastics team will be in action at Rutgers University on Saturday night when they will face the host Scarlet Knights plus Air Force and Eastern Michigan.
