Gymnastics Opens 2012 Home Schedule By Posting A New School Record Team Score Of 194.625 In Win Over Towson
Purple Knights Win All Four Events On Their Way To New School Record Team Score In 194.625-192.475 Dual Meet Win
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team opened its 2012 home schedule in fine style on Friday night as the Purple Knights won a dual meet over the visiting Towson University Tigers by a score of 194.625-192.475. The total of 194.625 points is a new school record team score for Bridgeport.
UB won all four events on the night posting a score of 48.900 in the vault, 48.300 on the bars, 48.450 on the beam and 48.975 in the floor exercise.
The Purple Knights grabbed at least a tie for first place in each event, as sophomore Kamri Riles (Ellenwood, Ga.) and junior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) took first in the vault (9.850), sophomore Emily Turik (Crystal Lake, Ill.) tied for first on the bars (9.825), senior Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, Pa.) won the beam (9.800) and Repko tied for first in the floor exercise with Mesalles Sallares with a score of 9.850. Turik's score on the bars is a new school record in that event.
Mesalles Sallares finished second to Towson's Kacy Catanzaro in Friday's all-around competition with a total of 38.975 in the four events.
In the vault, freshman Caitlin Perry (N. Kingston, R.I.) had a strong showing taking fourth place with a score of 9.775.
On the bars, sophomore Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) took third with a score of 9.750, and freshman Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) was fourth with a score of 9.650.
Along with Repko winning the beam, Monica Mesalles Sallares was fourth with a score of 9.725 plus La Fex (9.725) and Tsikhanovich (9.700) took fifth and sixth place.
Kamri Riles (9.775) in third and a fourth place tie between Caitlin Perry and senior Jessica Watts (Marietta, Ga.) (9.750) along with Kacy Catanzaro of Towson put UB in five of the top six slots in the floor exercise.
The Bridgeport women's gymnastics team will take the rest of this weekend off before returning to action next Saturday, February 11 when they travel to Yale University for a quad meet.
