Gymnastics Scores A Season-High Team Total Of 192.975 At University Of Florida Quad Meet
Purple Knights Hold Their Own Against Some Of The Best NCAA Division I Teams In The Nation
Gainesville, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team held its own against some of the toughest NCAA Division I competition in the country on Friday night, as the Purple Knights scored a season-high team total of 192.975 points in front of almost 6,200 fans at the University of Florida's Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The host University of Florida Gators won the quad meet with a total of 197.775. The University of Arkansas took second place on Friday with a total of 196.700, and the University of Maryland was third at 193.075 followed by UB with its season-high team score of 192.975.
Junior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) was the top Bridgeport finisher in any individual event as she tied for third on the vault with a score of 9.850. Monica was also the Purple Knights' only all-around competitor at Florida, and she tallied a score of 38.575 in all four events.
Senior Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, PA) had a strong evening against tough competition on Friday, as she was the top Bridgeport finisher on the balance beam tying for tenth place with a score of 9.800, and Repko, along with classmate Jessica Watts (Marietta, GA) topped the UB gymnasts in the floor exercise by finishing in eleventh place tie with a score of 9.775.
Also doing a fine job on the beam for the Purple Knights at Florida were senior Caroline McAvity (Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada) and sophomore Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, CA) who tied for twelfth place with a score of 9.775.
The top Bridgeport finishers on the bars were freshman Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, OH), who took thirteenth place with a score of 9.650 and sophomore Emily Turik (Crystal Lake, IL), who was fourteenth with a total of 9.625.
The Purple Knights are back in action on Friday night when they host their first home meet of the season, a dual meet against Towson University. Action gets underway in the Wheeler Recreation Center at 7:00 p.m. on February 3rd.
