Gymnastics Team Turns In Strong Performance At Penn Sate Quad Meet
Purpl Knights Score A Season-High 192.250 Points
State College, Pa.-Facing their strongest competition of the 2011 season facing three Division I programs, the University of Bridgeport gymnastics team responded with a season-high 192.250 team scoring total on Sunday afternoon at a quad meet hosted by Penn State University. Sunday also marked the fourth time in five meets this season that the Purple Knights have topped the 190,000 mark. Bridgeport finished fourth on Sunday with their 192.250 points. Host Penn State took first place with a total of 195.500. West Virginia was second with 194.050 points, and Pitt was third with a total of 193.475.
UB sophomore Monica Mesalles (Barcelona, Spain) took third place the all-around competition scoring a total of 38.750 on Sunday afternoon. Monica's top individual events were a second place tie in the floor exercise (9.750) and a tie for fifth on the vault (9.850).
Top finishers for Bridgeport on the balance beam were juniors Caroline McAvity (Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada) and Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, Pa.), who tied for tenth place with a score of 9.625.
On the bars, freshman Emily Turik (Crystal Lake, Il.) was the top UB gymnast finishing in an eighth place tie with a score of 9.750
The Bridgeport gymnastics team is back in action next Saturday evening at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
