UB Gymnasts Take First Place At Rutgers Tri-Meet
Purple Knights Top Host Scarlet Knights And Brown Surpassing 190.000 Team Points For the Third Time This Season
Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport gymnastics took first place in a tri-meet hosted by Rutgers University on Friday, as the Purple Knights posted a team score of 191.975 to edge the host Scarlet Knights, who tallied 191.225 points. Brown was third with a total of 188.300
For the third consecutive meet, UB sophomore Monica Mesalles (Barcelona, Spain) won the all-around competition scoring a total of 38.875 on Friday night. Monica's top individual events were a tie for first place in the vault with a score of 9.825, fourth place on the balance beam (9.725) and a tie for fifth in the floor exercise (9.750).
The balance beam was Bridgeport's top event as a team at Rutgers, as senior Breana Collins (Phoenix, Ariz.), junior Caroline McAvity (Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada) and sophomore Chelsea Matteson (Phoenix, Ariz..) all tied for first place with a score of 9.775 followed by Monica Mesalles in fourth place.
On the bars freshman Emily Turik (Crystal Lake, Il.) and sophomore Adriana Panades Erra (St. Julia de Vilatorta (Barcelona), Spain) were the top UB gymnasts in the event as they tied for fifth place with scores of 9.700. Monica Mesalles was sixth on the bars with a total of 9.500.
The Bridgeport gymnastics team is back in action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to State College, Pa. to face Penn State University along with Pitt and West Virginia.
