Women's Basketball Defeated at STAC, 65-51, in Season Opener
Purple Knights will play again tomorrow at STAC against D'Youville (2 p.m.).
SPARKILL, N.Y. – In the first of two games in a 24-hour span to begin the new season, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team dropped a 65-51 contest at STAC on Friday afternoon.
In a tight matchup throughout, it was a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter that ultimately served as the difference. STAC turned a five-point game into a 64-43 lead with less than five minutes left in the contest.
Shakira Hester served as a major bright spot for the Purple Knights. The senior recorded team highs in almost every statistical category, including points (14), rebounds (13), steals (4) and blocks (4).
Hester is coming off a year in which she led the Purple Knights in scoring while averaging 12.0 points and 8.9 boards per contest. She grabbed nine double-doubles during the 2023-24 season.
Freshman Zahkiyyah Frazier helped Hester on the boards against STAC. The rookie finished with eight rebounds—five of which came on the offensive side of the ball.
Niyah Whitten ranked second on the team with eight points on Friday while Harmony Earth-Wiley and Ciera Cevallos each added five.
Collectively, the Purple Knights shot 20-for-60 (33.3%) from the floor. They made just three of their 23 attempts from three-point range (13%).
