Late New York Tech Basket Topples Pesky Purple Knights In ECC Women's Basketball Championship
UB Falls To Host New York, 61-59
Old Westbury, N.Y.-A basketball by New York Tech's Shalie Frierson with just six second to play in regulation lifted the third-seeded and host Bears to a comeback, 61-59, victory of the visiting, sixth-seeded University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the 2020 East Coast Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. UB closes out its season at 6-23 overall, and New York Tech moves onto the semifinals on Saturday at 20-9 overall.
Trailing, 32-30 at halftime, Bridgeport exploded to outscore the hosts, 23-9, in the third quarter to carry a 53-41 into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Bears would score the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to cut the UB lead down to two, 53-51, but the Purple Knights battle back to take 59-51 lead with 3:55 to play. Unfortunately, UB was held scoreless the rest of game setting up Frierson's game-winning bucket to cap off a 10-0 run to close the game for NYIT.
Juniors Alyzae Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) and Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) led the Bridgeport offense with 13 points apiece. Loney also grabbed seven boards on the night.
Freshman Gracen Kerr (Ansonia, Conn.) chipped in 13 points off the UB bench, and senior Judit Valls Dellavalle (Barcelona, Spain) closed out her Purple Knights' career with 10 points.
Zoe Amalbert led the victorious Bears with a game-high 14 points.
