Late Run Lifts Roberts Wesleyan To See-Saw Women's Basketball Win Over UB
Game Featured 19 Lead Changes And Six Ties
Bridgeport, Conn.-The visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks broke a 59-59 tie by outscoring the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, 7-2, over the final 1:42 of the game to post a 66-61 East Coast Conference road win in Hubbell Gym on Friday night. Bridgeport is now 8-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play; while RWC moves to 7-9 over and 3-3 in the ECC.
UB trailed 59-53 with 3:24 to play, but the Purple went on a 6-0 run to tie the contest before Roberts Wesleyan's game-winning spurt.
Friday's tilt was a see-saw affair that featured 19 lead changes and six ties. Bridgeport's biggest lead of the evening was an eight-point cushion in the first quarter, and the Redhawks' largest advantage was seven with 12 second reaming.
Senior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) led Bridgeport with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, and she also dished off five assists and blocked one shot.
Vonleh was joined in double figures by three teammates, as senior Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Gianna Gotti (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), each had 11 points and senior Nicole Johnson (Newark, N.J.) finished with 10 points.
Emily Miller led the Redhawks with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
The UB women's basketball team is next scheduled to be in action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when they close out a four-game homestand with an ECC game against Daemen College, weather permitting.
