Women's Hoops Battles But Falls To Unbeaten Jefferson University, 70-54
Senior Samnell Vonleh Leads the Purple Knights With 20 Rebounds And 10 Points
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team returned to the court following the Holiday Break and gave the undefeated Jefferson University Rams a battle but fell to the visitors, 70-54, in non-conference play at Hubbell Gym on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Purple Knights, who are now 7-5 overall this season. Jefferson moves to an unblemished 12-0 so far this year.
The host Purple Knights led 15-14 after the first quarter, but the visitors took control of the contest by outscoring UB, 21-9, in the second quarter to take a 35-24 lead into halftime from which they never looked back.
Bridgeport senior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott. Mass.) notched an impressive double-double on the afternoon scoring team points and grabbing a whopping 20 rebounds which were split evenly 10 and 10 on the defensive and offensive boards. Those 20 rebounds are a single-single UB career-best for Samnell.
Freshman Gianna Gotti (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) also netted 10 points for the Purple Knights on Sunday.
Jefferson's Caitlyn Cunningham led four Rams in double-figure scoring with a game-high 22 points.
The Bridgeport women's basketball team will open the 2019 portion of their schedule at American International College on Thursday, January 3 with a 5:00 p.m. tilt against the Yellow Jackets.
