Women's Basketball Defeats Wilmington (Del.), 78-70, For First Win Of 2018-19
Senior Samnell Vonleh Scores A Game-High 24 Points
Wilmington, Del.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team shot a blistering 55.0 percent from the floor for the game (33-of-60), as the Purple Knights picked up their first win of the 2018-19 season with 78-70 road victory over the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Friday night. The triumph by the Purple Knights also give UB bench boss Janie Mitchell her first win as a collegiate head coach. Bridgeport is now 1-2 on the season; while the Wildcats fall to 0-4.
Bridgeport senior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) had a strong evening leading all scorers with 24 points, as she shot 11-of-14 from the floor, plus Vonleh added five rebounds, five blocked shots and one steal.
Junior Kayla Hill (Massapequa, N.Y. ) also reached double-digit scoring with 11 points, and she grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Newcomer, graduate student Nkechi "NK" Ilang (Ebonyi State, Nigeria) had an excellent all-around game finishing with nine points, six rebounds and five assists.
Point guard Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) directed the UB offense with nine assists.
Jaelyn Durrett led three Wilmington players in double figures with 17 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will host Bentley University on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at 2:00 p.m. in Hubbell Gym.
