Third Quarter Blitz Lifts UB Women Basketball To ECC Win Over Mercy College
Purple Knights Snap Three-Game Losing Skid With A 64-46 Victory Over The Mavericks
Riverdale, N.Y.-Trailing 29-27 at halftime, the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 28-29 lead which they never relinquished on their way to a 64-46 East Coast Conference road win over the Mercy College Mavericks in a game played at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. UB outscored Mercy, 24-8, in the decisive third stanza and limited the hots to a total of only 17 points in the second half. The victory snaps a three-game losing skid for the Purple Knights who are now 6-13 overall and 3-6 in the ECC. Mercy slips to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Junior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) retuned to the court for Bridgeport after missing two game with an injury, and she led the Purple Knights in scoring with 12 points plus grabbed eight rebounds.
Vonleh was joined in double-digit scoring by sophomore Kayla Hill (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 11 points, all coming in the second half off the UB bench, and classmates Kadijah Dickson (Queens, N.Y.) and Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.), each added 10 points for the winners.
Stoddart also had nine rebounds and Dickson added seven boards, as the Purple Knights outrebounded the Mavericks by a 59-32 margin on the day. 21 of UB's rebounds came on the offensive glass on Saturday.
Bridgeport senior Morgen Caution (Baltimore, Md.) led all players in rebounding with 14 on Saturday, and she also chipped in five blocked shots.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team continues its three-game road swing at Robert Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y. on Friday evening, January 26. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m
